How to fit a working wood shop into a garage — planned around the space each machine needs to feed, not the space it occupies standing still.

The mistake that ruins most garage shops is planning around footprints. A table saw occupies about 6 square feet standing still and needs roughly 100 square feet of clear space to rip an 8-foot board — because the board has to start somewhere and finish somewhere. Plan for the clearance, and a small shop works. Plan for the footprint, and it does not.

Start with a clearance list, not a floor plan

Before you move anything, write down what each machine needs in front of and behind it:

  • Table saw: the length of your longest board on the infeed side, and the same again on the outfeed side. This is the biggest single demand in the shop, which is why the saw usually ends up in the middle.
  • Planer and jointer: the same, in a straight line through the machine. These want to sit along a wall pointing at an open run, or on wheels.
  • Miter saw: support wings either side, ideally the full length of your longest trim stock. This is why a miter saw station usually runs along a wall.
  • Bench: access from at least three sides if you can. A bench in a corner can only be worked from one direction.
  • Bandsaw and drill press: modest clearance, mostly to the front. These are the machines that can live against a wall permanently.

Now notice that several of those clearances can overlap, because you never use two machines at once. That overlap is the entire trick of a small shop: the table saw's outfeed zone can be the planer's infeed zone can be the assembly floor.

Mobile bases: the single best decision

Put everything heavy on locking casters. A machine on wheels can live against a wall and be rolled into the middle for the ten minutes it is in use, which means one clear zone serves every machine in turn. In a one-car garage this is not an optimization, it is the difference between a shop and a storage room — and it is what makes it possible to park a car again at the end of the day.

Two caveats. Locking casters must actually lock, or a machine walks under load. And a machine on wheels sits higher, which can matter if you have been matching table heights.

The zones a shop needs

1. Milling zone

Jointer and planer, ideally in line with each other and with a clear run in both directions. Rough lumber comes in here and leaves flat and square. This is also the dustiest, loudest part of the shop, so put it nearest the door if you have one.

2. Cutting zone

Table saw and miter saw. The table saw wants the open middle; the miter saw wants a wall with support wings. If you break down sheet goods with a track saw, this zone can be the floor plus a folding support, which is far cheaper in space than a big saw.

3. Bench zone

Bench, vise, hand tools, and the wall of storage above it. This wants to be the best-lit corner of the shop and the one furthest from the dust.

4. Assembly and finishing zone

Floor space, ideally the same floor space as the table saw's outfeed. Glue-ups need room to walk around a piece and reach every clamp. Finishing wants this area as clean and as far from active dust as the shop allows — which usually means finishing at the end of a session, with the air filter having run for an hour first.

Vertical space is free space

A garage has more wall and ceiling than floor, and almost every small shop under-uses both. French cleats along a wall let you rearrange tool holders without re-drilling. Clamps belong on a wall rack, not in a drawer. Sheet goods store on edge against a wall in a fraction of the space they take lying flat. Overhead, a simple rack above the door holds long stock that would otherwise dominate a corner — though remember that a hot, dry ceiling is a poor place to store lumber you care about, which a moisture meter will demonstrate quickly.

Power, dust and light

Power

Most garages have too few outlets in the wrong places. Every machine in a home shop here runs on a standard 15 A circuit, but running a table saw and a dust collector on the same circuit will trip it. Plan which machines run simultaneously — almost always one machine plus the collector — and put them on different circuits. Ceiling-mounted retractable cords beat extension leads across the floor, which are a trip hazard in a room where you carry sharp things.

Dust

Put the collectoras close as possible to the machines that need the most airflow, because every foot of hose costs you flow — the arithmetic is in our CFM guide. If you can only reach one machine, reach the planer. Hang the air filter where air can circulate in a loop rather than short-circuit.

Light

Garage lighting is usually one fixture in the middle of the ceiling, which puts your own shadow exactly where you are working. Add fixtures over the bench and over each machine, and keep a movable lamp for raking light — low and to one side — which is the only reliable way to see whether a surface is actually ready for finish.

The car question

If the garage still has to hold a car, the layout is decided for you: everything on wheels, everything against a wall by default, and a bench that either folds or sits along the wall the car does not use. It is genuinely workable — a great deal of good furniture has been built this way — but the setup and teardown time is real, and it is the single strongest argument for buying tools with folding stands. This is planning guidance rather than a measured study. The clearance figures above follow directly from stock length — an 8-foot board needs 8 feet of space before and after the blade — and the zone structure is standard shop-planning practice, laid out plainly for a garage-sized space.

How much space do you need for a woodworking shop?
A single-car garage — roughly 12 by 22 feet — is enough for a genuinely capable shop if the machines are mobile. What matters is not total area but whether one clear zone can serve as infeed and outfeed for each machine in turn.
Where should the table saw go in a garage shop?
Usually in the middle, because it needs the most clearance in front and behind — the length of your longest board on each side. Put it on a mobile base so it can be rolled back against a wall when it is not in use.
Should woodworking machines be on wheels?
