How to make a one-car garage into a shop that works — layout, mobility, dust and power, in the order that matters.

A small shop isn't a compromised big shop — it's a different design problem, and the shops that work solve four things: mobility, a solid bench, dust at the source, and enough power. Get those right and a one-car garage builds real furniture. Get them wrong and even a big space feels cramped.

Mobility beats floor space

In a tight shop, the machine you can't move is the machine that's always in the way. Put your heavier tools on mobile bases or shop-built carts so you can roll them out to use and tuck them back against a wall afterward. A saw that lives folded against the wall and rolls out for a cut effectively takes up no floor space between projects — which is why a rolling-stand jobsite saw suits a small shop better than a stationary one.

The workbench is the shop

Before machines, build or buy a solid workbench with a way to hold work — a vise or bench dogs. Everything else orbits it: layout, assembly, hand work, glue-ups. Deal with dust at the source

In a small, enclosed space, dust is a health issue, not just a mess — you're breathing it. You don't need a ducted whole-shop system on day one; you need collection at the tool that's making the dust. A shop vac with a cyclone separator handles sanders and a track saw; a small mobile dust collector handles a planer or saw. Add an air filter for the fine dust that lingers. Power and light

Most garage shops run on standard household circuits, which is fine for benchtop machines run one at a time — the trouble starts when a big machine and a dust collector both want to start on the same circuit. Know which outlets share a breaker, avoid running two heavy draws at once, and add task lighting over the bench and each machine. Good light prevents more mistakes than any jig.

The buying order for a small shop

Buy in the order the space rewards: a solid bench and accuracy tools first, then a shop vac and separator, then the one machine your next project actually needs (often a track saw for breaking down sheet goods, or a planer for dimensioning stock), then a mobile base to keep it out of the way.
