Shop Vac vs Dust Collector

Not a rivalry — a division of labor. One moves a little air hard; the other moves a lot of air. Which you need depends entirely on the tool.

A shop vac and a dust collector aren't competitors — they solve different problems, and most shops eventually own both. A shop vac moves a small volume of air at high suction (static pressure) through a small hose; a dust collector moves a large volume of air (high CFM) through a big one. Match the machine to the tool and both make sense.

The physics, in one paragraph

Fine dust from a sander or a router comes off through a small port and needs strong suction to pull it out — that's static pressure, and a shop vac has it in spades. Chips from a planer, jointer or table saw come off in volume through a big 4-inch port and need a lot of air moving to carry them — that's CFM, and a shop vac simply can't supply it. Ask a vac to clear a planer and it clogs; ask a collector to pull a sander through a 1-inch port and it can't generate the suction.

Which tool wants which

  • Shop vac (high static pressure, small port):random-orbit and detail sanders, track saws, routers, and general cleanup. Add a cyclone separator and it's a serious small-shop workhorse.
  • Dust collector (high CFM, big port): benchtop and floor planers, jointers, table saws, bandsaws, drum sanders — anything that throws chips in bulk.

The honest buying order

If you're starting out with handheld tools and a track saw, buy a good shop vac and a cyclone separator first — it's cheaper and it's the right tool for that work. Add a dedicated dust collector when you bring home your first chip-throwing machine, sized using our CFM guide. And remember that neither one catches the fine dust that hangs in the air after the machines stop — that's a job for air filtration, which is an addition to collection, not a replacement.

We haven't measured suction or CFM on specific machines ourselves — no lab. The split above follows from published port sizes, motor ratings and the physics of airflow, which is enough to make the right buying call without a benchmark.

Is a shop vac enough for woodworking dust collection?
For handheld sanders, a track saw and a router — yes, especially with a cyclone separator. For a planer, jointer or table saw that throws chips in volume, a shop vac can't move enough air and you want a dedicated dust collector.
Can I use a dust collector for hand sanding?
Not well through a small sander port — a collector is built for high volume through a big hose, not the high suction a small port needs. A shop vac is the right tool for sanders and other small-port tools.
Do I need both a shop vac and a dust collector?
Many shops end up with both, because they do different jobs. If you only own handheld tools and a track saw, a vac plus a separator is enough; add a collector when you buy a machine that produces chips in bulk.
